MAORI CEREMONIES
ARAWA CENTENNIAL MEMORIALS
Two Arawa Centennial memorials in the form of meeting-houses are to be opened officially by the GovernorGeneral Sir Cyril Newall at Te Awahou and Ohinemutu respectively on Wednesday. The Prime Minister (Mr. Fraser) ariel other Ministers of the Crown will be present at the ceremonies, and also the Hon. Sir Apirana Ngata, M.P. for Eastern Maori. On Thursday afternoon a ceremony will be held at which dedicated colours will be presented to the Arawa Troop of Boy Scouts by his Excellency, and to the Rotorua Company of Girl Quides by her Excellency. After this ceremony his Excellency will present to Scout Rihari Haia the Boy Scout Association's gilt cross in recognition of his prompt, courageous, and meritorious action in rescuing an infant from drowning. On Thursday morning a conference of tribal representatives will be held at Ohinemutu. This will be presided over by the Hon. P. K. Paikea, Minister in Charge of the Maori War Effort. Matters relating to the Maori war effort, the rehabilitation of Maori ex-servicemen, and the education of the Maori people will be discussed at the conference. There will be addresses by the Prime Minister and the Acting Native Minister (Mr. Mason). Another ceremony will be the official opening of the Maori School of Carpentry by the Minister in- Charge of Rehabilitation (Mr. Semple).
