PRICE OF PETROL

APPLICATION FOR INCREASE

An announcement that an application had been made to the Government by the oil companies for permission to increase the price of petrol was made by the Minister of Supply (Mr. Sullivan) when he was replying in the House of Representatives yesterday afternoon to an urgent question by Mr. W. Sullivan (National, Bay of Plenty). The Minister said that data relating to additional costs submitted in support of the application were now being examined.

Mr. Sullivan asked whether, if any increase was allowed, it would be substantial.

The Minister said that it would not be any greater than any of the individual rises made during the past year or it/o

Mr. Sullivan also asked whether, in view of the Government's desire for stabilisation, he would see that the prices of petrol and lubricating oil were not increased.

The Minister said that that was a matter which would have to be looked into closely. He did not know exactly what would be involved in it.
