NAZI PROPAGANDA

EFFORTS TO DIVIDE THE ALLIES

(By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright.)

(Special Correspondent.)

LONDON, March 10.

Interesting and vital political manoeuvres are going on at present behind the war.

* Germany is making every attempt to divide the Allied nations by raising the Bolshevik bogy. Her playing up of Russia's military successes is not only designed to whip up her own people but also to represent Germany as the last barrier against the Russian ideology. At the same time, as the London "Economist" points out, Germany is accompanying this propaganda with peace offers which have come through Sweden and Switzerland, and are "buzzing like a nest of hornets round the Vatican."

It is considered that the timing of the visit by the American Archbishop Spellman to the Vatican, coming on top of Count Ciano's appointment as Ambassador to the Holy See, coincided unfortunately with Herr yon Ribbentrop's visit to Rome.

"It begins to look as though the Germans may have won a round in their political offensive," adds the "Economist." For these reasons the comments of Vice-President Wallace in the United States bluntly advocating postwar co-operation with Russia are especially interesting and significant. They may, indeed, be more than spontaneous.

The call by Mr. Sumner Welles, the American Assistant Secretary of State, for detailed peace talks also fits into the scene. Equally interesting is a leading article in "The Times," London, advocating closer ties with Russia, and stating: "It must be a decisive factor in shaping the future British policy on the Continent, and one of the main concerns of British statesmanship must be to reinforce the efforts of the American leaders to promote American appreciation of it."
