SHORTLAND AREA BOMBED

(Rec. 10 a.m.) WASHINGTON, February 17. A Navy communique says: "During the evening of February 15 three United States planes attacked the Japanese positions in the Shortland Islands area. Planes dropped bombs on the enemy positions on Ballale Island. One plane failed to return. "During the evening Liberator heavy bombers, with an escort, attacked the Japanese airfield at Kahili, on the south-east coast of Bougainville. One escorting plane failed to return."
