REV. D. J. A. SHAW
A well-known Presbyterian minister, the Rev. David James Alexander Shaw, died in Auckland on Sunday. For about two years he had been in temporary charge of the Epsom Presbyterian Church during the absence of the Rev. J. W, McKenzie on war service.
Mr. Shaw was born in Hawke's Bay about 60 years ago and followed farming pursuits before entering the Theological Hall at Dunedin in 1907. After his ordination in 1910 his first charge was Lumsden. and he served later at Te Awamutu. Khandallah. and Hastings. In 1939 he became minister at Papakura, but was compelled by illness to resign soon after. Although still in indifferent health, he undertook temporary duty at Epsom some two years ago and continued his work until last Wednesday, when he became seriously ill. Mr. Shaw is survived by his wife and a daughter.
There was a slight earthquake in the south at 2.15 p.m. yesterday. The earthquake, though not violent, is stated to have been one of the most pronounced for years. A few occupants of business premises in Invercargill made a quick exit to the street, but some people did not notice the disturbance. In Dunedin some alarm was caused, but there was no damage beyond the breaking of a few light articles which fell from tables and shelves.
