THE GRAPE CROP

DISAPPOINTING SEASON

(P.A.) AUCKLAND, This Day. The new season's grape crop is reported to be disappointing, particularly in the Waikato, where the yield is down about 25 per cent., due to dryness and humidity. The quality is also below last season's. Elsewhere climatic conditions have been more favourable. Picking presents a labour problem, and vineyard owners are hoping for a fine spell in the next five weeks, when the bulk of the crop will be gathered. Mr. B. W. Lindeman, wine expert in the Department of Agriculture, states that new areas planted in wine and table grapes are not yet ready for picking. He estimates the production of wine, cider, and fruit wines throughout the Dominion this season at 240,000 gallons, similar to last season, despite the rationing of sugar.
