TRIALS FOR WOODVILLE

(0.C.) PALMERSTON N., This Day. Horses with engagements at Woodville were given their semi-final gallops under favourable conditions at Awapuni yesterday morning. The flags, however, were a long way out, particularly on the bends, and the times were of little value. Pay Roll, a brilliant track worker, set the main over five furlongs when she ran the distance in a fraction over 1.4. She covered the last three in 39sec, and was going very strongly at the finish. It was unfortunate, however, that rain fell shortly after her trial, for the going was inclined to be greasy later. Another fine effort over five furlongs was that of Caroline Bay and Happy Ending. They travelled evenly throughout and were timed.to run the full distance in 1.5 2-5, the last three in a fraction better than 40sec. Gladynev and Stairway worked pleasingly over a mile in 1.51, the last three furlongs in 42sec. They were travelling well within themselves at the finish and could have improved upon the time. Sterling Lad sprinted half a mile and he was not off the bit when running the last three in 39 3-ssec. There was little between Damask and Solver at the end of seven furlongs in 1.37 2-5, and they were not under pressure at any stage. . Te Awe Awe and Rink sprinted five in 1.7, the last three in 42sec. Sir Bradbury was too good for Jolly Ruler in a similar task, also run in 1.7. Lord Cavendish and Greek Effort were clear of Rama-Iti at the end of a mile in 1.52 3-5. Flying Hawk and Irish Fox sprinted six furlongs in 1.22 2-5, the former going well after a short "let-up." Sea Quex and Lady Virginia were kept to an even pace over six furlongs run in 1.26. Theolateral sprinted five furlongs, the last four in 55sec.

Blue Border and. St. Felicien came home the last three furlongs in 42sec to complete seven in 1.37. Star Peer was not under pressure in running five in 1.9.. Rickie, was timed to run the same distance in 1.9 2-5. Colerica, with a companion from L. Knapp's stable, was timed to run half a mile in 54 2-ssec.
