EARTHQUAKE REPAIRS
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —A great deal has been said lately about the charges for earthquake repairs, and as it affects our members and bricklayers generally we would be pleased if you will publish a few facts as far as we know the position The wages of bricklayers, with few exceptions, are 3s 4d an hour, as paid on defence works and extended to cover earthquake repairs, plus 3d dirt money. In our award we have a dirt clause of time and a half, but we waived this in favour of 3d as we were of the opinion that to enforce time and a half would be a hardship on a great many people. This offer was made to a committee of the builders and accepted by them to apply to all earthquake work. As far as we know there are no expert bricklayers getting £6 per day, as one distressed householder informed the union she was paying for her job.—We are, etc.. W G. BISHOP, President, W. RODDICK, Secretary, Wellington Bricklayers' Union.
