OBITUARY
MR. A. E. MILLS
Mr. Alfred Edward Mills, who was well known in New Zealand banking circles as chief inspector and for some time acting general manager of the Bank of New Zealand, died yesterday aged eighty-three. He joined the Bank of New Zealand in 1884. He was appointed manager of the Blenheim branch of the bank in 1902 and four years later he became an inspector. For the best part of 1910 Mr. Mills was acting general manager, and in 1914 he became chief inspector. The late Mr. Mills was born in England. Mrs. Mills, who was Miss Jane Grey Crawford, predeceased him six years ago. They were married in Auckland and their family consisted of Mrs. Arthur Luke, who is well known in the musical life of Wellington as Miss Dorothy Mills, and Dr. Arnold Mills, director of the Institute of Preventive Medicine, Bagdad, Irak. The late Mr. Mills was generally recognised in business circles as a sound banker with long experience of New Zealand conditions. His interests apart from his profession were mainly in art, music, literature, and gardening and he was a collector of pictures and rare editions o>f literary works.
The funeral took place at Karori this morning, the service at the crematorium being conducted by the Rev. Canon Davies. In addition to members of the family, there were present Messrs. H. R. Chalmers, general manager of the Bank of New Zealand P. L. Porter, assistant general manager; D. F. Reid, chief auditor; A. L. Hempton, former chief auditor; John Shaw, a former inspector; A. G. Henderson and E. C. Sare, inspectors.
