GLASS CONTAINERS
STANDARD SPECIFICATIONS
An order in the Gazette last week enforces a standard specification for glass containers. In a statement on the subject the Minister of Supply, Mr. Sullivan, congratulates manufacturers and users upon the way they have co-operated with the Factory Controller and the Standards Institute in reducing variety and sizes of containers. The specifications limit the types and sizes to be manufactured during the war emergency to those stipulated in a schedule, and the number has been reduced by about half. The demand for tin for the production of vital war supplies, said the Minister, leaves" little available for ordinary commercial purposes. Consequently any means which will increase the production of glass containers, which in many cases are replacing those previously made from tinplate, is of material assistance in maintaining supplies of essential commodities. There is no shortage of basic raw materials, and only the most use of available labour and plant capa_city is necessary.
