LOYAL FRIEND WINS
JOAN CONQUEST TAKES THE LAST
It was unfortunate for the Wellington Trotting Club that the weather should have taken an indifferent turn overnight, otherwise a record turnover might have been handled at Trentham on Saturday. Nevertheless, the total was £47,116, compared with £35.998 10s last year, an increase of £11,117 10s. The principal honours went to Loyal Friend, who took the Summer Handicap nicely from Worthy Cross, although a late attempt by. the latter nearly caught the favourite on the post. Joan Conquest, towards the rear throughout, came with a late run and finished third, ahead of Battle Colours. With the exception of Loyal Friend and Sabu, the same runners paraded for the Dominion Handicap, the concluding event, and Joan Conquest was backed down to a very short price. She duly won, but making an improved showing Battle Colours was beaten by only a head in an exciting finish, well clear of- Worthy Cross, who was badly placed on straightening up. In the Kaitoke Handicap Fantom trotted very solidly throughout and won with something in hand from Teddy Gregg and Flying Scott, the last-named coming home solidly to touch off- Rival Chief for third after having broken badly within sight of home. Later, in the' Silverstream Handicap, Rival Chief held off Teddy Gregg and won impressively. Safari trotted solidly and took third place from the erratic Flying Scott, who again broke up at a critical stage. A very smooth performance was registered by the good-looking Dinghy in the Woburn Handicap. Always handy, she beat My Lady Luck in the run home after the Jack Potts mare had attempted to lead throughout. Stuart Lee, after looking likely at t*e top of the straight, found the other pair too good for him. Lanaco, who had dashed to the front approaching the straight, stopped. Two falls seriously affected some of the runners. At his second appearance, in the Wainui Handicap, Trikkala, who had finished well back at his earlier start, won at odds, paying over a third of a century. Bons, who was again unlucky, got up for second, with Atawhero a useful third, ahead of Kaipaki Boy. Trailing along at the rear till crossing the top in the Camp Handicap, Audition came with a strong run in the straight and beat Master Lawn who made an early mistake, with Bill Scott third, the backmarker having run to the front three furlongs from home, only to weaken. Master Lawn made full amends in the Advance Handicap when, after being well back early, he ran to the front some distance from home and won easily from Motto, with Rorqual holding off the bracketed pair, Modern Parrish and Mighty.
