SURPRISE BLOWS
USE OF WINTER NIGHTS
(Rec. 9 a.m.) LONDON, Feb 7. Soldiers of the Red Army south of Rostov are taking advantage of the winter nights to deliver surprise blows against the enemy, says Moscow radio. Russian automatic riflemen are penetrating into localities held by the Germans, clinging precariously to the outside of tanks. ' The "Izvestia" says that the Germans are hurrying,tank and infantry reserves into battle west of Kupyansk. The Russians seized thousands of tons of meat when they captured Kupyansk. Reuters Moscow correspondent says that General Golikov's forces m the new advance beyond Kupyansk are now 45 miles from Kharkov and forging towards Chuguyev. The Germans brought up considerable reinforcements and launched several counter-attacks, but all were repulsed. A Moscow communique says: 'We approached Bataisk at night and occupied it after fierce house fighting. The enemy suffered heavy losses m men and material. The Russians east of Kursk, after heavy engagements* occupied a large number of inhabited places."
