CELEBRITY CONCERT
The N.B.S. Symphony Orchestra, (Mr. Andersen Tyrer, conductor) and Mr. Ignaz Friedman, solo nianist, attracted a crowded attendance at the Opera House last evening.' The principal work performed was Tschaikowsky's pianoforte concerto in B flat major. The concert was also distinguished by the presence of their Excellencies Sir Cyril Newall, GovernorGeneral, and Lady Newall, attended by Major Holland Martin, Sir Harry Batterbee, British High Commissioner, Count Wodzicki, Polish Consul, and Countess Wodzicka, Mr. Hislop, Mayor of Wellington, and Mrs. Hislop. The concert opened with the overture to the Polish opera "Halka" (Maniusko), performed by the orchestra. It was a promising beginning of what proved to be an outstanding concert as to the compilation of a programme inclusive of works by Russian, Polish, and Czech composers, and their performance by the famous soloist and by the orchestra, of which Mr. Vincent Aspey .was the leader. Mr. Friedman's solo numbers included several of his own works, "Vienna Dances," "Etude in G Major," and "Marquis et Marquise," and due homage was paid to Chopin. The orchestra numbers, which were received with emphatic marks of approval, included the descriptive "A Night on the Bare Mountain" (Moussorgsky), overture to "The Bartered Bride" (Smetana), and a place was found in the programme for the delicate work of Delius, who was represented by "A Village Romeo and Juliet." The proceeds of the concert were for patriotic purposes.
