CIVIL DEFENCE
FIRST WEEK'S TRAINING
»- ' * . ■ •, The 33-trainees who started on Monday- at the -National Service ' Department's Civil Defence School of Instruction at Wellington have completed t&£ first week of their three weeks cojirse, and have made a favourable impression on the panel of lecturers. Some of the older men, whose average* age would be about 40 years, were inclined to doubt the value of the training, but they are reported now to be just as keen and enthusiastic as the others. That keenness was demonstrated by a number of the men forfeiting their annual leave to attend the- school and since then there has been a further reflection of.it ur arequest -by the trainees for the, studies to be continued o n several nights of the week, although the training programme had provided for the majority of the nights being free. In addition to the theoretical study, field work is being done. . . < Asked for his opinions about the school, an Auckland trainee said he thought it was a pity that it had not been started twelve months or more ago. However, he was finding the lectures well worth while, and thought that, although there would have to be some adjustments to suit local conditions, the course would assist materially in achieving uniformity of organisation and training. In another respect also the school was valuable; it enabled representatives of. the services all over the Dominion to meet and discuss matters of common Today the school visited the No. 11 District Warden's post, and went on to the tennis court at St. Peter s where a team of four girls demonstrated the bandaging of a fractured thigh with wooden splints and the Thomas splint This splint has a ring which is passed up; the injured leg and fixed m position and the foot is immobilised more securely than with wooden splints. Mr. F. A. Waterhouse explained the work as it proceeded.
