GERMAN REGRETS
WAR AGAINST ENGLAND
(Rec'9.3o a.m.) LONDON, Feb. 1
Stockholm says it is reported from Munich that the "Neueste Nachrichten" states: "We neither wished for nor reckoned on war against England. Hitler has said again and again that he did not want war against England. If in 1939 somebody had predicted that we must, resist simultaneously in North Africa, at Rzhev, at Stalingrad, Cologne, Lubeck, and Rostov, we would have collapsed. To be equally strong in the east and the west is an almost superhuman demand, which we must meet and overcome."
According to reports from Berlin, the German propaganda will be: "It is not in Britain's interest to help Russia; therefore let us make peace. Russia should realise that Britain and America want Germany and Russia to exhaust each other in order to help their plan for world domination. Why should Germany and Russia go on fighting for their benefit?" Swedish observers describe the anniversary day speeches by the Reich leaders as the Nazis' swan song, reSorts Reuters correspondent in. Stockolm. The "Dagens Nyheter" says that the appeals to German help in the war effort were so strong that one could have believed the, war had only begun if the appeals did not coincide with such war news headlines as "German retreat in Russia," "Eighth Army in Tunisia," and "Maikop lost." The Rome radio commentator Mario Appelius today said: "The, signatories of the Tripartite Pact must win or die. Germany and Italy have mobilised all their material and spiritual forces as a reply to the Casablanca conference. Whoever loses in 1943 will lose the war. Nineteen hundred and fortythree will be a year of blood and sweat. It is the final do-or-die year."
