THE MESSINA RAID

HEAVY DAMAGE DONE

(Rec. noon.) RUGBY, Jan. 31. A United States communique issued in Cairo today, describing the raid on Messina, by Liberator bombers, states that scores of bursts were seen on and in the immediate vicinity of San Giovanni, the Mess)na ferry terminal, and on the railway tracks to the south. Three direct hits were scored on a merchantman moored in the harbour, and many other hits were seen on the port power station, on workshops, and along the waterfront. An anti-aircraft battery in the harbour area was knocked out. Enemy aircraft were encountered in the second attack, but failed to press home their attack. All the aircraft returned.

An Italian communique admits that the raid on Messina caused considerable damage and that 51 people were killed and 105 injured.—B.O.W.
