FAREWELL TO MR. HAMANN

"We have very good reason to be thankful to Great Britain for allowing such distinguished officers as Mr. A. D. Wilson (who has left for England) and Mr. C. W. Hamann to come to New Zealand and help us," said the Minister of Civil Defence (Mr. D. Wilson) yesterday, when presenting a bound set of Centennial Pictorial Surveys ("The Making of New Zealand") to Mr. Hamann on behalf of his associates in the Civil Defence Branch of the National-Service Department. After a visit to Australia on an advisory mission, Mr. Hamann will return to Lon-( don, where he will resume duty as Deputy Chief Engineer, Ministry of Home Security. "We hope heartily that Mr. Hamann's association., with his native country will not cease with the conclusion of his special engagement for very important service Here," added Mr. Wilson. , ' • Mr. Hunter (Director of National Service) remarked that Mr. Hamann's associates were as highly appreciative of his personal qualities as 01 his professional qualifications. He had fitted into the team very well indeed. His experience of blitz conditions in England had proved very helpful to' New Zealand. In a brief speech of thanks Mr. Hamann said he realised on his arrival about eight months ago how difficult a jab headquarters had in regard to the general public. However, in his journeys through the Dominion he found that the painstaking work of head? quarters had been appreciated. The Minister could be congratulated on having such a team. He would always have pleasant memories of the encouragement arid friendly co-operation which he had received during the period of his engagement.
