COURT-MARTIAL SENTENCES
Sentences were today promulgated in the case of two soldiers who were involved in a fight at a Wellington mobilisation camp. Found gtfilty by a court-martial of striking a soldier, Sergeant Andrew Taipaha was reduced, to the ranks, and Private Victor Sydney Collins was sentenced to 30 days' detention for striking a superior officer.
In the court-martial evidence it was stated that the offences occurred while Collins was in solitary .confinement on bread and water. Blows were exchanged when Collins's cell was being searched, Collins striking the sergeant because Taipaha trod deliberately on his toe. Later Taipaha returned to Collins's cell and struck him. Collins was described as a difficult prisoner, and was in detention for insubordination. On one occasion he had swallowed part of a razor blade deliberately.
