SHIP HIT AT 26 MILES
(Rec. 2 p.m.) NEW YORK, Jan. 29. How the French battleship Jean Bart, lying at Casablanca when the Allies invaded North Africa, was hit and crippled by an American battleship from a distance of 26 miles, was told by Rear-Admiral Hooper to the Radio Engineers' Institute. He said the first broadside, directed by radio from an observation plane, hit the Jean Bart's deck, but did not put the ship out of action. The observation plane suggested a slight change in elevation, and another salvo from the same almost incredible distance struck the Jean Bart's side at the waterline, smashing the hull beyond repair.
