AUSTRALIAN MILITIA
SERVICE BOUNDARIES
CANBERRA, January 29. The Defence Act Amending Bill, which is to extend the boundaries for the use of militia, was introduced in the House of Representatives by Mr Curtin today. The Bill defines the area in which the militia is hable for service as the "area bounded on the west by the 10th meridian of east longitude, on the north by the equator, and on the east by the 159 th meridian of east longitude." This means that New Zealand, New Caledonia, the Philippines, Guadalcanal, and most of the islands of the Netherlands East Indies will be outside the service area. Singapore, where 17,000 Australians were captured by the Japanese, is also excluded. The Bill will be debated on Wednesday.
