NOTES AND COMMENT

-T*Y.O. Winner. —The tactics adopted by the Trentham trainer E. J. Adams of taking Master Dash along quietly since his failure at Riccarton bore fruit in. the Fitzherbert Handicap, for the Gynerium colt held on surprisingly well. Master Dash was originally trained by his owner, R. Gregory, of Clive, but the colt was left in Adams's care on the way home from Riccarton early last month. . Late Run.—lnability to begin smartly enough is counting against Marram meantime, but she is invariably found finishing on. Such is not altogether surprising in that she comes, from La Moderne, whose wins included the New Zealand St. Leger, A.R.C. Queen's Plate, and King's Plate, etc. Outstanding.—Seldom is a harness race won so easily as was the Daggers' Trot at Wyndham, comments a southern writer. Over the last halfmile Dynamic paced right away from her opponents and strung the field out. Dynamic, who is by Quite Sure, will be in keen demand when next she appears. For the Stud.-r~Arrangements have been completed for the King's classic winner Big Game to do stud duty at the Aislabie Stud, Newmarket, next season. This will enable • English owners to patronise the son of Bahram and Myrobella without incurring the expense of sending their mares to the National Stud in Ireland. Has Lost Form.—Prior to the holidays .Whackie gave indication that an outing or two would bring him back to top form, but the Arausio gelding has been a complete failure. There appeared td be some excuse for him on the first day at Trentham, but he again retired in the closing stage of the Metropolitan Handicap on Saturday. His owner, Mr. M. J. Moodabe, of Auckland, was in the market at the yearling1 sales, and he went to 700 guineas for the handsome colt by Battle Song from the Paper Money mare Endorse. On the second ' day Trainer H. Dulieu bought on behalf of his patron another colt by the same sire 'at 550 guineas, the dam in this instance being the Paper Money mare Helen Gold. Judged on looks, these juveniles should be good. Surprised.—When working at Trentham prior to the first day iMadame Rachel was bandaged in front and did) not look a particularly bright prospect. However, she ran a great race in the highweight event, being touched off on the post by Nightray. She was installed favourite in the same company on Saturday but quite failed,to reproduce the effort. , Great Innings.—For an owner tp^svin three races on the one afternoon isP.k Wellington Meeting is exceptioria^Jsut Mr. G. M. Currie experienced' -ktitch good fortune last Saturday. Further, all three were' bred by him. Spiral, the sire of two of the winners, Stairway and Screen, and Ringmaster, the sire of Rink, had yearlings representing them at the National Sales, and had that "hat-trick" been performed prior to the juveniles entering the ring their breeder would probably have benefited to a greater degree than he did. The majority of the Koatanui Stud lot went at reasonable prices, but a colt by Ringmaster from Midinette went to 400 guineas. Another by the same sire and from Moquette was knocked down at 380 guineas, and a colt by Spiral from Curtain was disposed of at;32o guineas. It was interesting to note that G. W. New, of Awapuni, the trainer of Rink, Stairway, and Screen, himself secured a filly by Ringmaster from the Limond mare Lavish., Hard to Win. —Since registering her one success of the current term, in the .Flying Handicap at Ohinemuri, Foxola has sbQ^p consistency without being able fo "win, her seven succeeding starts finding her out of the money only once. Third in both the Auckland Cup and A.R.C. Handicap, the Foxbridge mare again filled that placing in the Wellington Cup, but she retreated to fourth in the W.R.C. Handicap on Saturday. Her consistency is deserving of better things. RACING FIXTURES. = Feb. 6—Wlnton J.C. Feb. 6 —Egmont R.C. Feb. 6 —Matamata R.Q. Feb. 6 —Poverty Bay T.C. Feb. 6—Marlborough R.C. Feb. 13—Rotorua R.C.
