RELIEF FOR ARMY IN NEW GUINEA

(Rec. 9 a.m.) CANBERRA, Jan. 21. Units which have been serving in New Guinea will be withdrawn to the mainland and given leave wherever possible. This was announced .today by the Army Minister (Mr. F. M. Forde). Th 6 Minister said, however, that the speed at which the scheme could function would depend entirely on the strategic situation. A schedule had been drawn up providing for the regular replacement of troops in New Guinea and Northern Territory. This hdd worked satisfactorily so far as the Northern Territory was concerned, but military operations had upset it in New Guinea.
