BOARD OF INQUIRY
WESTPORT AIR TRAGEDY
A Board of Inquiry to investigate and report on the accident to the twinengined de Havilland Dragonfly aircraft of Air Travel (New Zealand), Ltd., which came down in the sea four miles off shore from Westport on December 21, after losing its starboard propeller, has been appointed by the Minister of Defence (Mr. Jones). The four passengers in the plane lost their lives.
The members of the board are Mr. W. F. Stilwell, S.M., of Wellington (chairman), Squadron Leader G. B. Bolt, R.N.Z.A.F., Hobsonville, and Commander F. C. Allen, commercial air pilot, of Auckland. Under the Air Navigation Regulations, 1933, the board is charged with the duty of establishing the cause of and responsibility for the accident, and, where necessary, of making such observations and recommendations from the evidence given at the inquiry as it deems necessary with a view to the preservation of life and the avoidance of similar accidents in the future. The board will commence its sitting at Hokitika next Tuesday, January 26.
