NATIONAL SAVINGS
FIGURES FOR DECEMBER
It was announced by Mr. J. M. A llott, chairman of the local National Savings Committee, today that National Savings deposits and sales of 3 per cent, five-year Bonds in Wellington amounted to £34,611 during December as against £42,469 for December, 1941. In summarising results, Mr. llott said that although the results of last December suffered by this comparison he was glad to place on record the fact that Wellington's support last month compared more than favourably with that forthcoming in other main centres. For example, although National Savings receipts in Auckland for December amounted to £44,161, this city has a quota of £15,000 per week as against Wellington's £8000 and whereas Wellington had reached its quota on three occasions, Auckland could not record even one success. Mr. llott continued by saying that the threat to New Zealand's security might not now seem so real, but despite more encouraging news from overseas it still behoved everyone to give of his best to the war effort. He was confident that National Savings supporters in the Wellington area would continue to play their part this year and not only help to maintain the city's proud record of contributing substantially to New Zealand's war programme, but also to safeguard their own economy by practising thrift and limiting individual spending to essentials.
