OBITUARY
CAPTAIN R. HUNTLY
Advice has been received by the Union Steam Ship Co. "of the death at sea from heart failure of Captain Robert Huntly, master of the Taroona. The late Captain Huntly was born at Arran, Scotland, in 1885, and went to sea at an early age,.serving eight years in sail and steam before joining the Union Company's service in 1911 as fourth officer of the Manuka. He later served as .third, second, and chief officer for a number of years and in the latter capacity was attached to the Moeraki, Waitemata, Manuka, and Waiotapu; . Captain Huntly was appointed acting master of the Karamu
in 1924, and afterwards had temporary command of: the - Kahna/and...._Kohirl before reverting: to chief officer jof the Hauraki and Tofua a year later. In July, 1926, he was reappointed • master;' his first command being the Kohiri.. Since fhen ■* he commanded many"" of i the company's vessels, including the Kamo, Kowhai, . Kittawa, *.: Ngator.o,, Kakariki, Ngakuta, . Kiwitea, Kini (2nd), Kahika (Ist), and Talune. He was then transferred to the Bass: Strait Steamer Express Service and commanded the Ooonah and Loongana be-' fore being appointed to the Taroona in November, 1936. Captain Huntly ;is survived by his wife and family, who reside in Melbourne.
