SECOND FRONT DEMANDED BY PRESS
invasion of Europe
(Rec. 11 a.m.) LONDON. Jan. 3. The British Press has renewed its demand for the opening of * second front to Europe. Newspapers emphasise that the defeat o€ , the Naiis In Europe must not b«, . left to the Russians alone. An Allied invasion of Europe this year is essential for victory, they *»y. Mr. J. L'■ Garvin, writing in the "Sunday Express," declares; 'Supreme, energy and stark sacrifices on something like the Russian^ scale will be - required if the hopes of the democra- .. i cies for 1943 are to be realised by the end of the year. We should never foriget that the duty of the democracies, towards the Russians is .not to admire i but to relieve them. This can_be done only by direct intervention in Europe. ! The "Sunday Express" comment*. editorially: "We have struck hard and usefully in North Africa, but this is not enough. If we cani force the withdrawal of 50 to 160 German divisions - from the eastern front we can fairly .., certainly look for victory in 1943. Invasion of Europe will alone lead i» this end." .
