NEWS IN SOMALILAND • (Rec. 11 a.m.) LONDON, January 3. One of the first acts of the new Governor of French Somaliland, General Bayardelle, was to return to the population the radio sets which the Vichy authorities had confiscated. The Jibuti correspondent of the United Press reports that General Bayardelle has released' those who were held in custody for. their Fighting French sympathies, and has arrested thirty-three members of the Italian armistice commission. Generals Platt, Le Gentilhomme, and Bayardelle attended a parade of troops in Jibuti to celebrate the colony's new freedom. General Le Gentilhomme, addressing the population declared: "You have been in the dark about what is going on. Now you are free to have your own opinions. No pressure will be applied. You can read any foreign newspaper you like, and listen to any radio station you please."
