RAIDS ON GRETE
LARGE AIR FORCE USED | LONDON, January 3. Allied aircraft have increased their attacks on Axis airfields and ports across the Mediterranean. The island of Crete was again attacked yesterday. On Wednesday night and again on Friday night the important enemy.airfield at Heraclion was plastered with bombs and many fires were left burning. Yesterday's attacks were the first series,, of daylight raids since the island fell into enemy hands over 18 months ago. Allied light, medium, and heavy bombers, both British and American, swept over the island in large numbers, attacking the airfields and the port at Suda Bay. All our bombers returned safely and the Americans shot down one MelO9 and j damaged another. Other Allied aircraft flew over Sicily on Friday night and bombed the port of Palermo. Fires were started in the harbour area.
