WAKE ISLAND BOMBED
BIG FORMATION USED
HONOLULU, January 1. American bombers dropped 40 tons of bombs oitf Wake Island on December 24. All the planes returned, and huge fires were started. The Japanese were surprised and put up only erratic anti-aircraft fire. Admiral C. W. Nimitz, Commander-in-Chief of the Pacific Fleet, disclosed that the bombing raid on Wake Island was the largest mass army heavy bomber raid of the Pacific war. The attack was made at a low level and the fires were visible from a distance of 75 miles.
