CHRISTMAS PLEASURES
A pleasant Christmas was spent both at the girls' Borstal and at the Wellington prison at Mt. Crawford. Besides a nice party arranged through the Mothers' Union for the girls, the Women's Borstal Association provided gifts for every inmate, and cakes, etc.. [ all given with much kindness and good will, the shopping being done as usual by the treasurer of the Borstal Association, in a*most efficient manner. It was not possible to give the usual afternoon party at the prison, but the Presbyterian Social Service Association provided an excellent high tea for the men. There was a bountiful supply of ham. tongues, and saveloys, cakes and pies, with plenty of salad. The excellent dressing was made from a recipe provided by Mrs. R. Tait, J.V., who arranged the party with the help of the superintendent and staff. Cigarettes in plenty were given through the generosity of the Justices' Association, the Rotary Club, and Messrs. W. D. and H. O. Wills (collected by Mrs. M. H. Chatfield. J.P.). Permission for the parties wan given by Mr. B. L. Dallard, J.P., Controller-General of Prisons. It was regretted that the usual entertainment arranged by Mr. Norman Aitken could not be given on account of the lack of transport facilities.
