HOLIDAYS NEAR HOME
A correspondent- from the country, replying a few days ago to a pomplaint that travel restrictions prevented children from enjoying healthful country holidays, drew the attention of Wellingtonians to the advantages of their own city as a place for holiday recreation. The* beaches, the parks, and the Zoo, apart from the novelties and: pleasures of the city itself, made Wellington a place to which many country children would like to come for a change. Perhaps the difficulties of distant travel will open the eyes of many Wellington residents to these assets. Wellington is certainly well endowed with parks, beaches, and hills where adults, as well as children, may*j find a pleasant change from the rush of the town. Though freedom of .movement in certain areas has been restricted by war necessity, there are still wide spaces of seafront and treecovered hills, with all the beauty and freshness of the most favoured holiday resorts. Many of these places can be reached by short walks, others are. on tram routes,.and yet others are within the range of the petrol ration. The travel restrictions may prove to be less of, a hardship, and even a blessing, if they lead more Wellington residents j to explore the environs of their own town and discover beauties of which they formerly knew little. ,
