JAPANESE PRESS IN INDIES
Japanese newspaper companies are reported to have taken charge, under instructions from the military authorities, of the dissemination of news in the occupied territories of the southern regions, reports the Netherlands Indies Government. The well-known Press agency "Domei" will work in Malaya, Sumatra, and Northern Borneo, "Asahi" will work in Java, "Tokio Nichi Nichi" and the "Osaka Mai Nichi" will supply the Philippines with news, and the "Yomiuri Hoshi" is appointed for Burma. The companies ' mentioned will gradually absorb the local Japanese newspapers already existing in these countries. By granting a monopoly in the different countries of the Southern Pacific to a number of semi-official newspaper companies, the Japanese military authorities can tell Malaya, Burma, the Netherlands Indies, and the Philippines each a different story. It is doubtful, however, if the people in the occupied territories will be told about this monopolising of their news supplies, as the Japanese frequently use the names of well-known foreign Press agencies to emphasise the reliability of their information.
