AWAPUNI CONCLUDES

TOTE HANDLES £62,000

(By "Binocular.") First day's .form at the Manawatu Christmas Meeting proved surprisingly sound, Yogi, Pompit, and Sea Quex again winning. In Clarice's absence Kol Ragi took the sprint honours to complete a good double for B. H. Morris, of Greenmeadows. There was a great holiday ■ crowd present on Saturday and £62,256 was handled, making an aggregate of £97,658 10s for the two days, an increase 1 of £21,395 10s when compared with 1940. No meeting was held last year. Yogi and Good Scout, who' had run first and second in the Manawatu Cup, finished,in the same order in the Louisson Memorial, the pair being well clear of Amigo. Moutoa Bond was only a fair fourth, with . Classform putting in a late claim for fifth. . The time of 2.5 1-5 was good, the fast pace set by Lastik playing a material part to that end. ' : With Kol Ragi, Wings of Song, and Sterling Lad disputing the lead in the Awapuni Handicap, the open sprint, the pace was a cracker right from the barrier rise. Kol Ragi finally wrested* the lead to stay there and win nicely from Poutatau, who finished particularly well to force* 1 back.Black Robe. Caroline Bay was fourth. Backers suffered an early setback when Alchemy, who had been «promising to win a race for some time past,-took the lead early in the Linton Highweight. Thereafter he was never headed, holding off Nightglass very nicely* with Glaciate and Colincamps next. Coming from behind the leading division, Barrosa won the Juvenile Handicap after a sharp struggle with Star Peer, with Gulf Stream weakening into third. Lady Nahleen rah a promising fourth. , ~ In the Apprentices'. Handicap, Theolateral, Donegal Bay, and Sir Bradbury ran'wide turning -into the straight, enabling Pompit and Lady Spiral to come through along the rail. Over the last furlong Pompit held on too, well for Lady Spiral, with Theolateral coming again for third, ahead of Donegal Bay. The improving Royal Counsellor made a strong bid to win the Highden Handicap, but Sea Quex beat him home by three-quarters of a length, with Nighean and Parvati doing best of the others. Both Flying Hawk and Killeymoon ran disappointingly. Taking charge turning across the top High Class took the Kelvin Handicap quite attractively. Flying Spy came home solidly, beating Gay Genet, who steared a very erratic course and was third. Daljarrock failgd to see the journey out. ■: - ' \ Splendidly handled by B. H. Morris in the Christmas Handicap, Centennial went to the front crossing the top to hold off a strong challenge from Duality, with Glenfalloch a very useful third after showing a lot of early pace. War Credit ran up half a mile from home, but failed to go on with it. ■■~. DETAILED RESULTS. The detailed results were:— Linton Highweight Handicap, £200; l*i miles.—ll Alchemy, 9.0 (J.
