TRIALS AT AWAPUNI

Heavy rain fell at Awapuni yesterday morning, but it cleared shortly after 5 o'clock and the semi-final gallops were all done on the course proper, the flags being 36 feet out except in the straight, where they were 42 feet from the rails. ' ■ Possibly the best fri?4 was, that of the Gup candidate Rink, who beat Gladynev by a neck over a mile in 1.49 2-5. The time was not fast, the last three furlongs taking 41 4-ssec, but Rink was going, very smoothly at the finish. Gladynev finished strongly, but was not as impressive as Rink. Auburn Lad, a brilliant track worker, did best over seven, and Pay Roll set the main over five with 1.5 2-5. The following gallops were recorded: — •. ■ , Over a Mile.—Rink, going smoothly, was a neck in front of Gladynev, shaken up, in 1.49 2-5, the last three in 41 4-5/ Broughton rides Rink in the Cup and Bowry will pilot Gladynev. Blue Border, High Class, and Theolateralwere in that order after running the distance in 1.50 1-5,-the last three in 41 4-ssec. Beau Monde, 1.50 2-5, last three in 42. He finished really well. ; Kinsman and Half Caste were a neck in front of Kanui Te Pai in I.sl,'the last five in 1.9. Kanui Te Pai could have done better. It is understood that he will race at Stratford, where, with going to his liking, he should give a good account of himself. Over Seven Furlongs.—The best time over seven was 1.32 3-5, registered by Auburn Lad, the chestnut running the first half-mile in, 51 2-ssec. Alethea, never off the. bit, ran her last half-mile in 56 3-ssec. Lady Spiral, easily in 1.38 2-5, the last three in 42 2-ssec. Kahuranaki, 1.38 3-5, the last three in 42 3-ssec. ( ' Over Six Furlongs.—Kaitoa, the last five in 1.114; Sir Bradbury, 1.24, the] last three in 40 3-ssec, Over Five Furlongs.—Pay Roll, 1.5 2-5, the last three in 39 2-ssec; Nighean, clear of Tetratina, in 1.6; Stairway, in front of Darcy in 1.8 3-5, the last three in 42sec; Flying Ace, under a good hold, 1.10 3-5; Colerica, 1.8 3-5; Battle Zone, the last four in 54sec; Sea Quex beat Rama Iti in 1.6 3-5, the last three in 40sec; Merlac, 1.10; St. Felicien, 1.6 4-5; Colonel Bogey, 1.12. Over Four Furlongs.—Sea Spi broke 54sec; Camp Maid, 53sec, the last three in 40sec; Rawalpindi, 54 l-ssec, the last three in 39' l-ssec. Over Three Furlongs.—Classform, half-pace to the three, and home in 39sec. She looks a picture. Caroline Bay worked twice round on the sand. She looks in great heart.
