INDIAN VICEREGENCY

MR. CHURCHILL'S APPARENT

QUANDARY

(•By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright.) (Special Correspondent.) LONDON, December 14. There is little satisfaction in Britain regarding Lord Linlithgow continuing as Viceroy of India, and the comment that has been made since the appointment was announced indicated that he was probably the third choice. Both Lord Cx*anborne, Lord Privy Seal, and Sir Archibald Sinclair, Secretary of Air, are said to have refused the post, and also Mr. Attlee, leader of the Labour Party and Dominions Secretary, and Lord Halifax, Ambassador to Washington. Some people are of the opinion that Mr. Churchill frankly does not know whom to appoint. There is general regret that no new appointment was made, and also a growing belief that the Indian impasse will till the end of the war.
