EFFORT BY JAPANESE
New Papuan Foothold
LONDON, December 15. . The Japanese are now trying desperately to gain a new foothold on the north coast of Papua. Reuters correspondent suggests that the enemy may have been able to establish small beach-heads further up the coast at the mouths of the Mambare and Kumusi Rivers, respectively 18 and 42 miles north of Buna. The troops were probably brought by a convoy which was severely punished by Allied forces. It is reported that probably some of the reinforcements mid supplies got ashore. The Japanese troops were packed into about 20 landing barges, and supplies were.dropped overboard, attached to petrol tins. Our bombers "smashed nearly all the barges and many of the floating* dumps. Fuel and ammunition exploded in the water. The Japanese cruisers and destroyers were last seen heading- for New Britain with Allied aircraft in pursuit.
