FUTURE WORLD
THE PART OF YOUTH
; "You young people are going forward into an era when you will have to do more than your daily work. You will have to think about your country and the safeguarding and maintenance of its life in these southern seas," said the Hon. Mr. Justice Smith, at the prize distribution at Rongotai College yesterday. "We are a small democracy with a high standard of life and freedom. In times of peace we are free from the physical fear of want But for the immediate protection of the United States, we should have been overwhelmed. "You must look beyond the boundaries of your own country; look beyond the boundaries of your own Empire; look to these other great countries and learn to understand them. So you may help this small country to make its contribution to a common policy of peace, backed, where required, by adequate force. Although we are small, we are not insignificant. Even, in a world war we can play a part with telling effect by virtue of our great production of food supplies and by virtue of the prowess of our fighting men on land, on the sea, and in the air. Nevertheless, of ourselves, we can do nothing. Therefore let our expression of view be respectful but firm and clear. It may have a value. I remind you that in 1936 New Zealand, was one of those who advocated that Italy should be stopped. If another crisis arises when you older boys are about thirty, do not be afraid to express your view, knowing that you may have to muster your forces to back it." The Education Department's Correspondence School held its break-up ceremony in St. Francis Hall yesterday, the Governor-General (Sir Cyril Newall) and Lady Newall being present. Sir Cyril Newall said it was for the children of today to fit themselves for the' important tasks which lay^ ahead when they grew up. Each would have a definite part to play, but they would not succeed or find real happiness if they looked on life only from the point of view as to what they could get out of it: what they put into it mattered most
