RED CROSS CERTIFICATES

Certificates gained by members of the Ist Wellington Men's Detachment of the Red Cross Society were presented by Mrs. Alexander Gillies at a social gathering last evening. The Assistant Commandant, Mr. J. K. Booth, presided.

A message of good will was received from the 2nd Wellington Men's Detachment. Special guests included Dr. Alexander Gillies and, Mr. C. H. Chapman, M.P. (president and chairman respectively of the Wellington Centre of the New Zealand Red Cross Society). Mr. C. R Harkness, Acting Centre Commandant of the Men's Detachment: Miss T. K. Llssington, secretary of th<; Wellington Centre; Mr. T. i\ Rcilly, hon. secretary of the Dominion Council of the New, Zealand Red Cross Men's Detachments; Mrs. V. Hole, Commandant of the Wellington Red Cross Women's Transport Service; Sister D. White-law, Advisory Director of the Wellington Red Cross V.A.D.; Sister G. Bonnor, Lady Superintendent of the Berhamporc V.A.1).; Sister Dormer, secretary of the New Zealand Registered Nurses' Association; Miss E. H. Bryenton, first aid officer, and Miss E. Kmcrson, of the Red Cross Women's Transport Service ; and Mr. Arthur Pascoe. The Commandant's Cup, which is competed for annually, was won by Corporal Arthurs. The runnor-up was Private Beuth. The cup was presented to Corporal Arthurs by Mrs. Harkness. The coveted Merit Medallion, of which holders throughout New Zealand number less than a hundred was presented to the Assistant Commandant, Mr. J. B. Booth, and to his son, Quartermaster ,1. H. Booth. The successful candidates were congratulated by Mr. Chapman, Dr. Gillies, Mr. Reilly. Mr. Harkness, and Sister Whitelaw. It was* announced that, as the result of interest and enthusiasm shown by Mr. Arthur Pascoe, the formation of a men's detachment in the Hutt Valley was under way.

Pleading not guilty in the Magistrate's Court today to a charge, of attempting' to commit bigamy, Gladys May Smith, aged 34, a waitress, was committed by Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., to the. Supreme Court for trial.
