PETONE STREET LIGHTS
The National Service Department has asked the Petone Borough Council to explain > why an order of the Dominion Lighting Controller to reinstate 64 street lights had ' been ignored.
The Deputy Mayor, Councillor H. Greien, said that to " reinstate the: lights would mean the use of - new bulbs, which were in. short supply, and as the lights would still have to be shrouded he considered that they would not serve any, good purpose. It was not a case .of public safety. Though.the lighting restrictions were being " relaxed in.some districts that would"hot apply to Petone and the - shrouded lights were little use to the public. ■.- : Councillor A. G. Steffen sen moved that until a reply was received to a request for a legal opinion no action should be,'taken to reinstate the lights. . . Councillor R. A. Anderson moved, as an amendment, that the lights be reinstated immediately. Even if they gave only a little light they would be of benefit to the public. i The' amendment was lost and the motion carried, on the casting vote of the Deputy "Mayor. ; The Hutt Valley. Electric Powei Board had advised . the council that owing to a shortage of stranded wire for suspension purposes certain street lights in Jackson Street would have to be converted from suspension to bracket type. On the motion of Councillor A. G. Steffensen it was resolved to ask the Power Board to seek a supply of necessary wire through the Ministry of Supplies.
