MOUTOA BOND WINS
BRILLIANCE OF CLARICE
(By "Binocular.")
Although activities were ushered in in light rain the weather later cleared and conditions were quite pleasant for the Otaki Maori Racing Club's Summer Meeting at Otaki. With the approach of Christmas, the attendance was not so large as at recent fixtures on the Course, but the totalisator returns of £27,281 10s represented an increase of £9168 over last year. A minor surprise was witnessed in the Rere Nekitini Memorial Stakes when Moutoa Bond beat Noble Fox very comfortably. After Triple Crown and Sir Crusoe had set the pace early, Moutoa Bond worked up on the inner of Triple Crown, who ran wide turning into the straight, and Noble Fox, who had followed her through, never looked like pulling the Trentham mare back, there being four lengths between them at the post. Last crossing the top, Hasten came home for third, with Talenta and Golden Acre next. Talenta looked dangerous along the back, but after running forward dropped back again. Sir Crusoe stopped and was last to finish.
Forging to the front in the first furlong in the Waiorongomai Handicap, Clarice stayed there to the end, winning by a good four lengths from Duality, who came round the bunch on the turn. Whackie, looking a shade big, had a keen struggle with Augment for third, .with an interval to Indian Sign, who found the early pace too much for him. Tuatara, having his first race for some time, made a bold showing to the straight entrance. Clarice made full use of her light poundage to have the others scratching the whole way, and the time, 1.25, must be a record for the course. A BOLD GALLOPER. Having his first outing for some time, Pastmaster, a big type of a four-year-old by Ringmaster, brought off a surprise in the Puketoi Highweight Handicap. He ranged up going along the back and secured an opening on the rail crossing the top to take charge before the straight was reached. Thereafter he held off Siglow in the run home, the latter failing to keep a straight course. Stratford came on for third,, with Sir Fox fourth after getting away badly. Both Trig Station and Dalesman were prominent early, but they were finished with crossing the top, and Alchemy also weakened after holding a nice position for the first mile. A GOOD FAVOURITE. Killeymoon, who had shown a fund of promise at his first start, returned to the course to - win the Manuao Maiden Plate No. 1 after a sharp struggle with Po-Huka. The latter, after working up on the inner of Dark Bloom crossing the top, ran a shade wide turning into the straight and allowed Killeymoon to secure the rail Kept up to his work, Killeymoon beat Po-Huka by a length, with Royal Counsellor finishing solidly for third, half a length back. There was a big gap to Transcript, who was- wide out all the way. Dark Bloom showed a lot of early speed, but stopped. A NARROW CALL. Jurrfping away smartly in the Pukekaraka Hack Handicap. Sterling Lad was three lengths clear of Flying Hawk and Valsheen crossing the top, with Te Awe Awe, Lady Derby, and Spirit next in the running. Although the field closed after straightening up, Sterling Lad held off Flying Hawk by a head, with The Whipper coming, along the rail for third, ahead of Val-' sheen. Jolly Ruler and Spirit were] together next, the last-named having been wide all the way. It was Sterling Lad's second successive win. ONE FOR TRENTHAM. Although he did not have a great deal to spare at the finish, Tavern Light registered a good performance in the Manuao Maiden Plate No. 2. He had to be hurried along in the early stages and was forced to come round the leaders, Solver, Quick Decision, and Manutere, on the turn. Over the final furlong Kahuranaki had the Trentham gelding doing his best to score by a neck, with Radio Call a useful third from the fast-finishing Gynerio. Manutere was rushed up approaching the turn but could not go on with it. A COMFORTABLE WIN. After running in the open ranks at Waipukurau, Lastik returned to the hack class to win the Otaki Hack Handicap very comfortably from Donegal Bay, with Imperium finishing fast in third place. Broiefort Star, after Being prominent the whole way, was fourth. Magic Night fell and brought Merger down over her, and Prairie met with a check crossing the top that ruined her chance. UNDER DIFFICULTIES. ; A warm favourite for the Rahui Hack Handicap, Come True, met with a check going away from home and had to be hard ridden to make up the leeway. First Edition and Condole made all the running to the straight entrance, where Come True, who had run up on the outer, hit the front. Over the last half-furlong Come True had to be kept going to hold off Hamish, who finished very courageously, with Hikorangi holding on for third. Then came First Edition, Gamble, and War Credit, the latter pair making quite a good showing. DETAILED RESULTS.
