AMERICAN TRANSPORT

STRIKES MINE & SINKS

WASHINGTON, December 12,

The Navy Department announces that the liner President Coolidge, of 21,936 tons, struck a mine in the South Pacific while transporting about 4000 troops and sank with the loss of only four.

The Navy Department has not disclosed in what area of the South Pacific the President Coolidge was sunk. It said that prompt and efficient rescue efforts limited the casualties.

It was reported yesterday that the U.S.S. Alchiba, an auxiliary cargo ship, was lost recently as the result of enemy action. Reports indicate the total casualties to be three missing.
