SINKING
(Rec. 9 a.m.) CANBERRA, Dec. 13. The story behind the recent communique reporting the scuttling of a German blockade runner in the Indian Ocean was told today by the Minister of'the Navy, Mr. N. J. O. Makin He said that Allied warships were responsible for the loss of the German ship. The warships intercepted the German vessel, which sent out false name signals in an effort to avoid capture, but the ruse did not succeed. When they realised that subterfuge was useless, the Germans took to their boats No sooner were the boats clear than a series of explosions occurred on the German ship, which commenced to settle by the stern. Allied warships made doubly sure she was sunk by shelling her. German personnel. was picked up. The action cost neither casualties nor damage to the Allied forces.
