DEFAULT IN RETURNS

INCOME TAX PROSECUTIONS

Pointing out that taxpayers were not entitled to rely, on default assessments and reminding notices, Dr. N. A. Foden, appearing for the Commissioner of Taxes in the Magistrate's Court yesterday, suggested that the time had arrived when heavier penalties should be imposed on delinquents. Dr. Foden said a vast amount of extra work was involved because of late returns, and, more particularly under present conditions, it was impossible to continue with default assessments and notices of reminder. The Commissioner desired'to warn all those who were in the habit of relying upon default assessments or notices that they were liable to prosecution if the returns were late. Indulgence in the matter of time was granted automatically by the Commissioner on written request. FINES UP TO £25. Ten persons who had made default in sending in returns were fined sums up to £25 by Mr. W. F. Stilwell, S.M. Carston Ronald Horman, radio dealer, three returns; was fined £25; Tade Gerald Fouhy, dentist, two returns, £12 10s; Cecil Edward Stroobant, company manager, £10; Alexander Turner, baker, Robert John Gilkes, fitter, Phillip Hollis, mechanical engineer, and Arnold Leadbitter, factory employee, each £7 10s; Jack Victor Thompson, labourer, and Joseph Zachariah, clerk, each £5; Percy Rimmer, dentist, £2 10s. Further prosecutions* are pending.
