A CHRISTMAS CALL-UP
, (To the Editor.)
Sir,-t-In fixing December 22 for publication of the Gazette calling up men in the age group 41 to 45 the Minister of Rational Service has overlooked the splendid job that is being done, under conditions tbjt are already trying, by the- Post and Telegraph Department, which, by its unselfish release of manpower, is mainly staffed by women. There will be 31,000 registered letters, and for each one there is a hand-to-hand check from the time it is posted until it is delivered to the addressee by the postwoman. I wonder if one might ask the Minister to visualise the Post OfHce at the peak of the Christmas rush being saddled with this additional responsibility* As one w^orhasihad'practical
experience of Christmas in the Post Office, there is no doubt in my mind as to what Christmas, even in the ordinary sense, is going to mean to the women who are carrying on our jobs. If it is at all possible they should be spared this additional burden. —I am, etc.. EX-POSTMAN.
