CONVERSION OF CAR
A young soldier awaiting trial by court-martial escaped from his station yesterday, took a car from a doctor's garage in Austin Street, and went on a trip that included the Hutt, Lyall Bay, and Brooklyn. At 12.45 this morning a constable saw the car pull up by the Midland Hotel and two sailors apparently about to pay the driver, When the constable approached, the driver, James Henry Lawson, soldier, aged 20, ran 1 along Waring Taylor Street and Maginnity Street, and was found hiding by a fence, In the Magistrate's Court to* day Senior-Sergeant T. Campagnolo said Lawson had a mania for convert' ing oars. The doctor's car, when found, had a flat tyre and the elee^ trical system was damaged. Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., sentenqed Lawsorn to three months' hard labour.
