CHURCHILL AUCTIONS

The wide interest that has already been taken in the Churchill Auctions, to be held tomorrow in the Jacobean Room, Kirkcaldie and Stains, Ltd., has been amplified"' by numerous cabled bids from Australia for some of the outstanding items and also a large number of telephone bids from all parts of New Zealand. The auction will be opened by the Mayor (Mr. Hislop) at 11 a.m., and at 3 p.m. the final auction will take place for the Churchill Book. The wide variety of goods will make the sale one of the largest ever held in New Zealand and it is anticipated that the patriotic funds will benefit considerably. A bid of £150 from Auckland for the Churchill Book has been raised to £170 by Mr. A. R. Christian and friends, of Wellington. There has been some controversy as to how the Churchill Book came to New Zealand The book was given by Mi*. E. Joseph, of London, to the High Commissioner, Mr, W. J. Jordan, with the request that it be autographed by the Prime Minister of England and sent to New Zealand with Mr Fraser to be auctioned on behalf of patriotic funds. A public-spirited friend of the Turnbull Library, wishing to pay a tribute to both the Churchill Auctions and the library, has presented to the librarian a handsome cheque to be used for purchases at the auctions on Thursday He expressed the hope that his example would be followed by others in appreciation of the institution set up by Alexander Turnbull.
