SOVIET COMMUNIQUE
(Rec. 12.30 p.m.) RUGBY, Nov. 2. A successful counter-attack in Stalingrad is mentioned in the Soviet communique. The enemy was dislodged from fortified buildings. North-west of the city a Soviet reconnaissance unit penetrated the enemy defence and wrecked seven pill-boxes and some dug-outs and wiped out an infantry company. In the same sector Soviet artillery destroyed two German batteries and routed a concentration of infantry.
In the Nalchik area Soviet forces conducted heavy defensive operations, and artillery destroyed some enemy tanks, lorries, and guns. North-east of Tuapse an enemy reconnaissance group was surrounded and annihilated.
On the north-western front sharp artillery duels occurred and an enemy attempt to capture one place failed, with the loss of an entire infantry battalion.—B.O.W.
