QUALITY FIRST

AMERICAN TANKS AND AIRCRAFT

LONDON, October 23,

United States production of tanks and aircraft is now being based on quality rather than quantity. Announcing this today, President Roosevelt said that battle experience had proved that to have greater power and strength was more important than mere numbers. The American targets of 45,000 tanks and 60,000 aircraft for this year would not be reached, but the planes would have superior hitting power and range, and the tanks would have more sting in them and would be bigger all round. Experience in the desert battles had j led to a change from the M 3 tank, which had been scheduled for largescale production, to the bigger M 4. It would probably be necessary to cut down the production of luxury and semi-luxury goods to save the available steel for essential munitions.
