LAVAL'S CHOICE OF MEN FOR REICH
(Eec. 12.40 p.m.) LONDON, Oct. 23. Vichy announced that Laval reported to Cabinet regarding his appeal for French workers to go to Germany. He particularly stressed the necessity for the unoccupied zone participating in the scheme in the proportion cf a quarter of the total number so that the burden should not be borne solely by the occupied zone. The independent French news agency stated that 50 workers at the Citroen works in Paris were shot at the end of September for opposing the enrolment of French workers for Germany. The independent Belgian news agency reports that the Germans have taW-into custody 760 Belgians, including priests, monks, and politicians, in the Huy citadel. . . The German military authorities in Paris last night warned that if necessary force will be used to get French workers to Germany, says the correspondent of the "Daily Mail" on the French frontier. The warning followed the failure of many workers to report at the designated stations for departure to Germany yesterday. A British United Press correspondent says that Marshal Petain has refused to broadcast a plea to French workers to go to Germany. The unrest against the attempted mobilisation is reported to have tied up many of the French railway services..
