CHURCHILL AUCTION
THE DUNEDIN SALE
(P.A.) DUNEDIN, October 23. More than £500 was, realised for patriotic funds in a two-day sale of books, manuscripts, works of art,, and antiques in the first of \the Churchill auctions, and the only one to be held in the South Island. ' The collection of books was well representative:of.New Zealand authors, past and present, and for these prices j were generally within market range. but for general works the demand was poor and some interesting first editions, including Dickens, Kipling, and Trollope items, went cheaply.. Pic-, tures and prints, including a Baxter Napoleon 111 and a Whistler etching,, brought good bidding, and, prices for many beautiful art objects were good. Mr. P. A. Lawler, the organiser, states that he had received the first > bid for the Churchill Book, presented to the Prime*; Minister. Mr. Fraser, by, Mr. Winston Churchill. The offer, £50, is from a citizen of Auckland. The next sale will be » at Auckland, commencing on Tuesday. , New Plymouth sprang a pleasant" surprise on the central committee with an application to hold a separate auction. Although practically the last to commence activities; New Plymouth has had so outstanding a response that the fourth, auction will be held there. Taranaki is a rich storehouse of. art and historic treasures and gifts have been offered freely. Mr. R. M. Bacon, the secretary, and his band of workers were congratulated by the central committee. The date of the New Ply- T mouth auctiqn is not yet fixed. /
